This is a memorial of a soldier from our town that was killed in Iraq. The memorial is beautiful. The  bronzed reminder.  Says it all courage and Loyalty.  

If you ever make your way into Boston, be sure to visit the Holocaust Memorial.  The tall towers represent the gas chambers.   Walking Through these towers, you can see the "gas" coming up from the burning embers below.  The glass panels have a smokey look, but upon closer view, you can see it is inscribed with the numbers given to the people of the concentration camps.  Quotes from survivors are written on each panel.  The numbers appear backwards in this photo because it is looking through the glass. It truly is a beautiful memorial for such a horrific event in history.

Halloween is over, but I thought I would post some pictures from another holiday:  Los Dias De Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead.  Unlike Halloween, it is not a scary time.  Rather, it is a festive occasion and calls for celebration.  There was a big fiesta in Mesilla, New Mexico to honor the dead.  People built altars for family members who have passed on.  Flowers, candles and   favorite foods are often included in the displays.   Sheets of paper are decorated with skulls and handwritten notes.  Friends and family gather around to tell stories and answer questions about their loved ones.   Roadside memorials are constructed at accident sites to remember the dead.  They are tended as carefully as the graves.  I drove a few miles south of Las Cruces this morning and saw six of these memorials, many with multiple victims.  It is really heartbreaking.

Last week end we made our annual trip to the Firemans Memorial Firefighters from all over the state are there.  We camp while we are there.  We had nine sights between our group.  At camp we played some pretty serious games of polish horseshoes On Friday night they have a silent light parade  Saturday morning is the actual Memorial service.  The wall and the statue are something to see.  I wish I had a better close up to show.  Then we go to the full blown all lights and sirens blaring parade.  There are over 100 entries of  
old firetrucks and new firetrucks. I liked this shot of the gadgets  on new truck.

Sadly, at the memorial, most people just take pictures of the sunken ship itself, and they never seem to look up and notice the somber, yet strong, architecture. It's too bad; most people don't really think of what it is, which is a tomb.
