Henderson Cemetery

Today we drove down to Henderson, Minnesota for Henderson Heritage Days.  I took a hike up to the local cemetery.  It was an overcast day so I thought some close in work would be best.  Here is a marker for a woman who had a fascinating first name--Popup LinkExperience Bennett. She died in 1875 at the age of 70 years, 6 days.  She was a Popup Linkmother. Popup LinkLloyd was some couple's son.  He died too young.

Minnesota State Fair 2006 Finale

By tomnorth written 9/4/06 12:20 PM, published 9/4/06 12:20 PM
This is the last of my images from the 2006 Minnesota State Fair.  I'm interested in your opinion.  Do you prefer the Popup Linkblack & white or Popup Linkcolor version?

I was attracted to the light streaming in at the far end of the barn.  And who can resist all those steel girders.

Because of the desire to bring out some of the details in the shadows without blowing out the highlights I did work this a little in CS2.  Nothing extreme, just a little masking.

Minnesota State Fair 2006 Part II: Sleeping

By tomnorth written 9/3/06 12:58 PM, published 9/3/06 12:58 PM
During our day at the fair on Friday we saw lots of Popup Linksleeping going on.  I don't think I'd sleep so close to that end of a cow's anatomy.  Popup LinkSleeping in the barns seemed to be the most popular.  Of course we saw Popup Linkanimals sleeping too, like this Popup Linkporker who won the biggest bore contest weighing in at 1,040 pounds.  But my recollection is that we saw more Popup Linkhuman-types sleeping than animals.  You might be able to tell from this last shot that I was very nearly on the same plane as my subject.  Hmmm, I wonder why.  zzzzz

Minnesota State Fair 2006 Part I

Yesterday we spent practically the entire day at the Minnesota State Fair.  One of the themes of the day was animal fashion statements. Get the nerve of this Popup Linkhorse wearing Anna's top. This one looks like a Popup Linkthrowback to the sixties. And here's a Popup Linkcool dude among some fashion-challenged friends.  Tomorrow, the sleeping theme.

Big Dogs

These are some photos I took at the International Wolf Center in Ely Minnesota. Popup LinkLeader of the pack I have been there many times, but on this day the wolves were hanging out where you could see them pretty good.Popup LinkRelaxing After watching them for a while I concluded they are just big dogs, with all the usual dog behavior.Popup Linkkiss These timberwolves are very big and they live in the wild up here. In the winter especially you can hear packs of them howling.Popup Linkthe pack They are agile hunters, here is one on the Popup Linkprowl. One more picture showing their doggy behavior, notice the white one with his tail straight up, he is in charge! Popup Linksubmit to me Just a note, these pictures were all taken through glass.

I met a teenager from our church for a photo shoot Saturday morning down by the Mississippi. It was  Popup Linkcloudy and threatening rain. I got some shots Popup Linkunder the Stone Arch Bridge. I also took some shots of the Popup Linkold mill Popup Linkand new Guthrie Theatre side by side. Unfortunately we got rained out.  We agreed that we'll do it again under better weather circumstances.

St. Paul Winter Carnival

By SimonHuang written 2/4/05 8:23 PM, published 2/4/05 8:23 PM
Went across town last weekend to see the winter carnival. This is for all the sculptors whose hard work melted away after only one week.

The Popup Linkice dragon . Beware of fire- you may just melt yourself.

Replica of the state Popup Linkcapitol . The blue light was a bonus as another photographer took a picture using flash at the same time I took this shot without flash.

Popup LinkMolding the monster . What is King Kong's next target? Could it be the basilica?
