NYC artist stetching me ??? I think he was looking at my daughter, not me.... what do you think?
Have a great weekend everyone...I had a great time in NY with my children..... and missed you all!
These Vagabond Shoes Are Longing To Stray....
I heart NYC. It never ceased to be a total thrill for a desert girl like me, being in the big city. They say that you can always spot the tourists in NYC, as they are all walking around staring upward. And I'm sure that was me to a T every time I was there. Javsmom posted a great building shot that made me go all nostalgic for the good 'ol Big Apple, I got to looking at some of my old pics and decided to share a few. Here we go...
I didn't even notice until AFTER taking this shot that I had captured a virtual
parade of yellow cabs, how very Noo Yawk. And I always found it amazing
how peaceful the cathedrals could look nestled inside all that hustle-bustle too. Of course, the pigeons rule the land in NYC, and I just really liked the attitude of
the guy on the left, he just haaad to be different. And I love the people on the streets- where else do
gigantic foil-strip hats go well with any ensemble? The
Empire State building never failed to take my breath away. And this is how I imagined
Times Square in a Shady dreamland... though it looks pretty darned impressive in it's
Times Square au natural state of course.
Thanks for the building-in-a-building inspiration Javsmom! :)
While all the women came and went, barefoot servants, too.
Howie and I have a lot of history together. We are standing in front of Macy’s at Perch Point #1, on the NE corner of 34th and 7th Ave during our lunch hour people watching break. This intersection could be the most densely populated place in the world. But we have a little perch, out of the traffic, with an overhang that keeps out the rain and sun. Thank you Penny, Candice, Bugaboo and others for the challenge to take close-ups of
Le Carrousel. Located in
Bryant Park 42nd St and 6th Ave NYC. The last couple of days have been dreary, but yesterday I took a lunch hour walk over to the carrousel and a whole new world opened for me. The last time I was there it was packed with people. Yesterday, no one was there, the carrousel was not operating, a perfect opportunity to capture the
animals close up. For wider angle photos check my dashboard.
Bryant Park 42nd St and 5th Ave NYC
Seeking the space between the musical notes, Howie and I walk to Bryant Park during our lunch hour. Located at 42nd street and 5th Ave at this time of year, Bryant Park is a people's watching paradise. The park is transformed into a free open air skating rink during the Winter, huge white tents are erected in the park during Spring for the NYC Fashion Show, and later in the Summer the park shows classic movies on a giant movie screen.
It's a nice place to perch during lunch hour.

Strangers at The House That Ruth Built
When I go to
Yankee Stadium, fifty percent of my mind is on the game, fifty percent is on the other fans and food vendors.

The Players
The Fans
At this game I taught my 11 year old nephew how to score. When I told him he needed to write the temperature on the top of the score card he wrote "73 degress, right now". This is how he filled out his line up card for the Yankees - Johnny, Derek, Gary, Alex, Jason, Hedeki, Bernie, Robby and Gary. That about says it all, just a bunch of kids playing a game.
Games people play at Yankee Stadium.
Yankee Stadium, the House that Ruth Built, the Cathedral of Baseball, the Home of the Evil Empire. Here are a few games that are played while the Yankees play.
Bleacher Creatures - are in the right field bleachers. If I'm not mistaken, these are all season ticket holders. It is a tight knit group of people. In the first inning the bleacher creatures chant the Yankees fielder's names starting with the pitcher and ending with the right fielder. The Bleacher Creatures will not stop chanting a players name until the player tips his cap to them. Of course they stop chanting when the pitch is thrown.
Players Favorite Songs - Before a player comes to bat a song is played on the public address system. These songs are the player's choice. So when a player comes up to bat he will hear one of his favorite songs. The fans get a different taste of the player by listening to their song. When a relief pitcher enters the game their favorite song is also played. Mike Myers is a new relief pitcher and they play the sound track to the movie "Halloween". Marion Rivera enters to "Enter Sandman" by Metallica, and during the playoffs the whole stadium sings the song as he enters.
New York, New York - the song. "If you can make it there..." This song is played on the public address system after the end of each game. As you are walking down the wide ramps the song is blaring loud. If the Yankees win, they play the Frank Sinatra version, but if they lose they play the Lisa Minnelli version. They don't like Lisa. This song drove the Arizona Diamond Backs owner crazy during the World Series. He got the last laugh when the Diamond Backs won. My favorite quote from that series, when the Yankees were described as being a team of Destiny and Mystic, one Arizona reporter said, "Destiny and Mystic are just two adult entertainment dancers in downtown Arizona". I might be misquoting here, but who cares.
My cousin and I go to one or two games a year now. We always bring our own
food. During the seventies we went quite often when general admission was only $3.50 and you could get a good heavenly seat in back of home plate.

Say your prayers little one
Don't forget, my son
To include everyone
Tuck you in, warm within
Keep you free from sin

Gripping your pillow tight

In Coney Island, looking out from my balcony away from the ocean, is
Trump Village built by Donald's father, Fred Trump. They are affordable, large, high ceiling apartments for
rent. In today's real estate market, the village is very desirable. There are approximately eight (8) apartment buildings in Trump Village. In the photo of Trump Village, the
Q
train is shown traveling between Brighton Beach and Coney Island. You can take the Q train from Trump Village in Coney Island and arrive at Trump Tower in Manhattan in about 45 minutes.
New York Pics
These are just some random pics from my trip to New York since I haven't posted in a really long time. I haven't had time to shoot anything new. School keeps me pretty busy...-

These photos are of the same object but at different camera angles and point of view. The photos are of the black granite obelisk in front of 1 Penn Plaza on 34th street between 7th and 8th Ave looking west toward the New Yorker Hotel on 8th Ave. If I was to walk down the stairs and turn directly around, looking east I would see the top of the Empire State Building on 5th Ave.

Rush Hour
9AM, rush hour on 7th Ave and 35th St.
The red hand on the sign states "Do Not Walk" but they are
anticipating the traffic light changing to green.
Walking down a crowded street requires an awareness of the
openings in traffic and no distracting eye contact.

Changing New York
A few weeks ago, some of you will remember that lilbit posted an assignment here on Photographica. Eventually, she told you all that I was the person who gave her the assignment. Well, what she didn't tell you about is the reward for her grade. The next day, she sent me a PM and told me what she wanted. She sent me a link to a photograph that was on the New York Public Library web site, and said "That photo was taken in 1936. I want you to go to that spot, and take the same photo in 2006." Conveniently for me, I knew right where the photo was taken, so I told her I would do it.
Here is the original picture from 1936: Pike & Henry 1936
Please click on that link BEFORE you click my image. If you want to open the link in a new window, simply right-click it, and choose open in new window. I had to use the link, because I didn't want to violate any copyright laws...

As you can see, the street has changed a bit. For starters, the street has been widened to twice it's original size. Where you see the trees on the left side of my image...that's where the buildings are on the original. The trees are planted on a median that is in the middle of the road. Obviously, there is also a traffic light there now as well.
To everyone: I hope you enjoyed seeing the difference 70 years can make in NYC.
To Jo: I hope you get as much enjoyment out of seeing the result as I got out of capturing it for you.

New York Institute of Photography????????
I was wondering if anyone out there has had any experience with New York Institute of Photography. I thought about signing up for this just to brush up on my skills I have lost! I want to learn more. I have done some looking into this correspondence school and it seems pretty legit. Anyone have any comments?? www.nyip.com

Walking, walking, walking. I take a lot of photos on my way to NYC tourist attractions. Lately I’m finding the infamous places, the distractions, contain the soulful photos.
