Weathering The Storm: Texas Floods

By HeatherShade written 8/7/06 2:55 AM, published 8/7/06 2:55 AM
In my dry, desert hometown of El Paso, Texas, rain is a rarity, floods are even rarer... so we never expected this. Popup LinkBig, fat raindrops have been falling like watery missiles and Popup Linkdecorating evergreen needles like tiny diamonds. Yesterday our regular old residential street turned into a Popup Linkraging river avenue, with curbs and sidewalks Popup Linkdisappearing under the churning rainwaters. I sit, watching the Popup Linkstormy skies through my bedroom window, and wonder when we will ever be dry again...

Rain in the evening

By jellybean written 5/26/06 4:23 PM, published 5/26/06 4:23 PM

I found this poem right after I took these photos.  We had just had a short but intense thunder storm.  Enjoy and let me know what you think.

Rain (II)

      It thundered as if it would  Popup Linkrain;
Appeared sultry as if to feign;
The Sky was clear but blue-black now;
It looked as if the  Popup Linkrain would come!

The clouds were dense and moved slowly;
Lightning patterned the Sky fiercely;
The Wind was almost absent now;
It looked as if the Popup Linkrain  would come!

The Birds were quiet and nested;
Awaiting the downpour, they rested;
The Monsoon was active for now;
It looked as if the Popup Linkrain would come!

A few droplets of rain did fall;
Atop the heads of people on stroll;
Afraid, each hurried to his home;
It looked as if the Rain would come!

The Rain did come! The Rain did come!
For once rightly, the Rain did come!

Road Trip

Drove from to Santa Rosa today to pick up my son.  Took some shots along the way, including from inside the car during stop and go traffic (mostly stop). The clouds were so billowy they seemed fake, and then the storm provided some great photo opportunities. Love the Napa Valley views...even McD's looked good tonight.

I love my job, but sometimes I have time to get bored and start taking pictures of silly things. Like  Popup Linkscenery in my hood mirror, or Popup Linkwaiting to get through security.

Has anyone noticed the reflections in raindrops are Popup Linkupside down?

Something to Cheer me up

By cathelle written 12/15/05 9:13 PM, published 12/15/05 9:13 PM
What a crummy day yesterday was. (Oddly enough it seems as though it has been longer ago than that.) I was fired only a half hour into the day. The reasons were obviously made up. Although we have since figured out the financial motivation behind such sadly.  Still it's not a very nice Christmas present, and I am at a bit of a loss as I find myself faced with a job search at such a crucial time.  It was a good thing, though, that I was home, the Houston skies opened up yesterday and our backyard began to flood, which in turn can cause our house to flood.  I spent hours replacing towels along the back walls of the house trying to contain the water. (Though exhausting at the time, we are ok now.) But despite it all, my spirits did not hit rock bottom. I received a very Popup Linkwonderful Popup Linkdeliveryfrom my husband during the downpour that lifted my  Popup Linkspirits. If only for a little while I stopped the panic of the many situations and literally stopped to Popup Linksmell the Popup Linkroses.

As I was walking the dog this morning, I saw this amazing glow coming from the small patch of trees at the back of the complex. As I got closer, it got more beautiful. I took the dog home, and grabbed my camera, but by the time I got back over there, the light had shifted and it just wasn't the same. What a bummer! Here is what I did manage to capture...

Since some of you have gotten in to shooting sports(MATT!!!), I thought I would share the worst storm I ever had to shoot in. Football friday night!!! It was along time ago, but I still remember it vividly. I had to put my camera in a plastic garbage bag and cut a hole in it for my lens! The quality is not the best as the rain washed out anything that was in the light in places and I had to  push my film to asa 6400. Here goes...Popup Linkoops..  Popup Linklotsa rain Popup Linkgotcha  Popup Linkriver walk  Popup Linkstack  Popup Linkyummy..mud sandwich!
