My church (Garden of Grace United Church of Christ, www.gogucc.com) recently joined the United Church of Christ (UCC - www.ucc.org), and while attending the Southeast Conference this past weekend, I did some picture taking...

My entry for the bi-weekly challenge for Strangers is (ALAS!) too late, but I liked this picture so much I thought I'd share it anyway.  Popup LinkThe Beautiful Stranger  I believe it also fits the Emotion challenge this week.

Also, Niki in the Garden, the world's largest exhibition of internationally renowned artist Niki de Saint Phalle's outdoor sculptures ever presented, at the Atlanta Botanical Garden, was a great source for intersting subjects.  Here is one example:  Popup LinkWaterplay

Haven't posted in a while, thought today was a good day!

Strangers at The House That Ruth Built

When I go to Popup LinkYankee Stadium, fifty percent of my mind is on the game, fifty percent is on the other fans and food vendors.

At this game I taught my 11 year old nephew how to score. When I told him he needed to write the temperature on the top of the score card he wrote "73 degress, right now". This is how he filled out his line up card for the Yankees - Johnny, Derek, Gary, Alex, Jason, Hedeki, Bernie, Robby and Gary.  That about says it all, just a bunch of kids playing a game.

Games people play at Yankee Stadium.

Popup LinkYankee Stadium, the House that Ruth Built, the Cathedral of Baseball, the Home of the Evil Empire.  Here are a few games that are played while the Yankees play.

Popup LinkBleacher Creatures - are in the right field bleachers.  If I'm not mistaken, these are all season ticket holders.  It is a tight knit group of people.  In the first inning the bleacher creatures chant the Yankees fielder's names starting with the pitcher and ending with the right fielder.  The Bleacher Creatures will not stop chanting a players name until the player tips his cap to them.  Of course they stop chanting when the pitch is thrown.

Players Favorite Songs - Before a player comes to bat a song is played on the public address system.  These songs are the player's choice.  So when a player comes up to bat he will hear one of his favorite songs.  The fans get a different taste of the player by listening to their song.  When a relief pitcher enters the game their favorite song is also played. Mike Myers is a new relief pitcher and they play the sound track to the movie "Halloween".  Marion Rivera enters to "Enter Sandman" by Metallica, and during the playoffs the whole stadium sings the song as he enters.

New York, New York - the song.  "If you can make it there..."  This song is played on the public address system after the end of each game.  As you are walking down the wide ramps the song is blaring loud.  If the Yankees win, they play the Frank Sinatra version, but if they lose they play the Lisa Minnelli version.  They don't like Lisa.  This song drove the Arizona Diamond Backs owner crazy during the World Series.  He got the last laugh when the Diamond Backs won.  My favorite quote from that series, when the Yankees were described as being a team of Destiny and Mystic, one Arizona reporter said,  "Destiny and Mystic are just two adult entertainment dancers in downtown Arizona".  I might be misquoting here, but who cares.

My cousin and I go to one or two games a year now.  We always bring our ownPopup Linkfood.  During the seventies we went quite often when general admission was only $3.50 and you could get a good heavenly seat in back of home plate.

Enter Sandman
Say your prayers little one
Don't forget, my son
To include everyone

Tuck you in, warm within
Keep you free from sin
Till the sandman he comes

Sleep with one eye open
Gripping your pillow tight

Exit light
Enter night
Take my hand
Off to never never land

Not-So- Strange Strangers

By TravLin Vicariously written 4/21/06 9:09 PM, published 4/21/06 9:09 PM

Here is my attempt with the stranger challenge.  I had to laugh when I saw this holy man of some kind at the gas pump.  He was obviously not enjoying the rising gas prices, he kept shaking his head... I guess NOBODY can escape the prices these days.  Popup LinkGood vs Evil
The next two are from the archives.  This was an exuberant group of kids in a Popup Linkstreet band in New Orleans.
This girl was in a Popup Linkparade at the Big E fair last fall.

Texas Wild Flower

Went to see the Texas Popup Linkwildflowers last weekend (I know Miztli beat me to the story) and saw some  Popup Linkstrangers and even strangers with  Popup Linka dog.

However, to keep the flowers wild and beautiful, certain rules have to be followed. It is sad that despite the large warning Popup Linksigns, some on the Popup Linkother side  of the fence just don't listen.

Yes, it is a little daunting taking photos of complete strangers, and I found myself taking too many from the rear. So with the help of a zoom, or by simply asking, here is what I managed to get.
This Popup Linklittle chap was out with his parents, and loved the geese; while these Popup Linkthree were absorbed in conversation. I positioned myself behing this chap who was Popup Linkdeep in thought and didn't even notice me arrive & depart.
Thanks for looking.

This is going to be a tough theme for me because I always feel uncomfortable taking pictures of strangers.  I can count on two hands the number of shots I've taken in the past two years or so...  This will be a great way to push myself and try something new!  Popup LinkThis is a photo from the fair last year.  I was set to take a picture of my son when this girl bumped into me.  I got the shot of her by accident, but I'm glad I did.  She and the other kids were having so much fun with their silly string fight!

And in other news, you might remember a story I posted here some time ago [http://www.photographica.org/story/2005/11/9/181527/906] that featured a picture of  Popup LinkFrank , another stranger that I asked to photograph.  That picture is featured in the current issue of JPG Magazine!  It is my second 'published' shot, so I am thrilled.

I went on a nice field trip to Tavern on the Green in NYC..yup thats where Jessica Simpson eats sometimes..but i dont care 'cuase i dont like her...! well any way, outside of there i saw a a good source for a picture. i went up and said "Popup LinkDESCRIPTION_HERE ". so i went up and took a picture but apperantly, i was Popup LinkDESCRIPTION_HERE so i had to step back  and then it said Popup LinkDESCRIPTION_HERE .
when i got back to school there was a mock accident sponsered by SADD.  i was annoyed when i noticed that the administration didn't follow the Popup LinkDESCRIPTION_HERE rule and just let the guy smoke a pipe on school grounds..... what is this world coming to?!

Georgia Renaissance Festival Strangers

By SaxGuy written 4/18/06 7:10 PM, published 4/18/06 7:10 PM
Ahhh, what better place to find strangers to take pics of for the bi-weekly challenge. Some of these strangers were stranger than others. I took a lot of candids, but it was also a great chance for this extreme introvert to get over the fear (okay, terror...) of approaching someone I don't know and asking to take their picture. And you know what? They all say "sure" and posed for me. Imagine that. I'm already planning to go back to practice some more. If you've never been to a Renaissance Festival, they are loads of fun.
